Short answer: A pallet of sod usually covers about 450 square feet, which is about 45 rolls of 10 square feet each. Sizes vary by grower and grass type, so confirm with your supplier.
| Lawn area | Rolls to order | Pallets |
|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | 53 | 2 |
| 1,000 sq ft | 105 | 3 |
| 2,000 sq ft | 210 | 5 |
| 5,000 sq ft | 525 | 12 |
Working out the order
Measure the lawn area and subtract any beds, paths and patios. Add about 5% for cuts and edges, then divide by the coverage of one roll or one pallet and round up.
Pallet sizes commonly range from about 400 to 500 square feet, so the exact count depends on the farm. Ask what a pallet covers when you order.
Timing matters
Sod is a living product. Lay it within 24 hours of delivery, keep it shaded until you do, and water it right after laying. Order for the day you will do the work, and not earlier.
Worked example
A lawn of 40 ft by 30 ft has 1,200 sq ft. With 5% extra that is 1,260 sq ft, which is 126 rolls, or 3 pallets of 450 sq ft.
